SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE: panels, a dance film on grief + live performance by the cast
Fri Feb 9, 2024 7:45 PM - 9:30 PM
The Great Star Theater, 94133
Description
If you met grief face-to-face, how would it manifest?
Join us for the premiere of panels, a dance film on grief made in the Bay Area, by Bay Area artists. After the loss of a lifelong friend, a trio processes their grief through distinct, yet parallel journeys. Within a surrealist, horroresque aesthetic, panels delves into the beastly, complex, and beautiful aspects of grief. This film is fully a movement narrative, with no verbal speaking.
Prior to the film will be a live dance performance by the cast entitled “Grief Wrote Me a Letter," a collection of 11 solos where each movement artist will express personal perspectives on what grieving is.
Program runs from 7:45pm - 9:30pm. Doors open at 7pm.
Includes a stage dance performance (45 mins), intermission (20 mins), and film (30 mins). Venue will remain open till 10pm for mingling.
The Cast: Anna Gichan*, Iva Dixson, Sarah Emmons* play the lead grievers, and the stellar ensemble is formed by: Abigail Hinson*, Alex Foy*, Chisa Kobayashi*, Kat Brault*, Leila Massoudi*, Raychel Hatch*, Tajh Stallworth*, Trask Reinhart*, and Zoë-Elise Quon*. All asterisked dancers will be performing live.
Panels is the film, co-directorial, and choreographic debut of Tracey Lindsay Chan, whose grief over the death of her grandma, Bonnie, fueled this artistic vision. Bonnie was a Chinatown SF institution in her own right, and this film is in part dedicated to her.
Panels is co-directed by Eric Mann, who grew up loving the classic films he’d see with his dad at the Castro Theater in SF. He is the co-owner of Darling Street Pictures, a full-service production company that creates fiction and non-fiction works for film and television.
